What is a VIN or Registration Number?

Vin Number Image

A Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is a unique 17-character code that acts as the car’s fingerprint. No two vehicles have the same VIN. It comprises digits and capital letters that reveal the car’s unique features, specifications, and manufacturer details. The VIN is essential for tracking recalls, registrations, warranty claims, thefts, and insurance coverage.

If the VIN is less than 17 characters, it is likely from a pre-1981 vehicle. Before 1981, VINs ranged from 11 to 17 characters. For such cars, reporting is limited as they don’t follow the standard format.

Alternatively, a Registration Number is another unique identifier assigned during vehicle registration. Registration plates are typically composed of 7 characters: two letters, followed by two numbers (indicating the year), and then three more letters. For example, a 2024 plate might look like a BD51 SMR or AB74 CDE. This format helps identify the year and region of registration, allowing the vehicle to be easily recognized by its plate.

Whether you have a VIN or a Registration Number, you can choose either to proceed. Both options ensure that your vehicle is accurately identified. Select the one most convenient for you, depending on the details available.
